How To Earn your Certification
Knowledge Development
Knowledge development may be completed in a classroom setting OR eLearning.
Classroom (6-8 hours total): 2-sessions (approximately 3.5-hours each).
In the classroom environment, you have immediate access to your instructor, whom can answer questions in real-time, share personal experiences, and provide hands-on demonstrations. The instructor will guide you through PADI’s structured and highly effective learning system in safe, fun and supportive learning environment.
eLearning (5-10 hours total)
PADI eLearning allows you to study at your own pace and schedule, fitting the course into your busy lifestyle. Study offline, or online using a computer or mobile device. Your instructor will be readily available should you have questions and/or concerns.
Confined Water Training
Confined Water training takes place in a pool or an open water environment with ‘pool-like’ conditions. (5-dives)
(6-8 hours total): 2-sessions (3- and 4-hours each).
During confined water training, your instructor will guide you through mastering all the basic skills one needs to safely dive in the open water. In a professional, fun and safe environment your instructor will guide you on five total dives. During the dives, the instructor will explain, demonstrate, and evaluate every skill until you’re comfortable executing the skills on your own. You’ll also conduct ‘mini-dives’ in the pool to build confidence before moving to the open water.
Open Water Training
Open Water training takes place in the open water (lake, river, ocean, spring, etc.).
(8-10 hours total): 2-sessions (4.5-hours each).
During open water training, you’ll hone the skills you learned in confined water training. You and your instructor will practice most of the same skills as in the pool, but this time in a real diving environment. Each dive starts with a few skills, then the remainder of the dive is spent exploring the dive site.
Frequently Asked Questions
Medical Requirements
Scuba diving requires a minimum level of health and fitness. Chronic health conditions, certain medications and/or recent surgery may require you to get written approval from a physician before diving. Avoid disappointment, download and review the Diver Medical Form to ensure you won’t need a physician’s approval to dive before enrolling in a scuba course. Instructors, divemasters and dive shop staff are not physicians and should not be asked for medical advice; only medical professionals can give medical clearance to dive. If you (or your physician) have questions about medical fitness to dive, contact the experts at Divers Alert Network (DAN).
Prerequisites
The minimum age is 10-years old.
Divers 10- to 14-years-old earn a Junior Open Water Diver certification.
Junior Diver (10-11): Restricted to diving with a parent, guardian or PADI Professional to 40 feet maximum depth.
Junior Diver (12-14): Must dive with an adult certified diver.
Junior Open Water Divers automatically become Open Water Divers at age 15. Any replacement certification card or eCard purchased the day after the diver’s 15th birthday will automatically show an Open Water Diver (NOT Jr. Open Water Diver) certification.

Open Water Training (lake, ocean, etc.): 4
